Piper Plays Games

I like to play games. That’s ‘cause I’m a doggy. We like to play. Sometimes I play alone. But mostly my mom plays with me.

We play ball. Mom throws the ball. I have to run and jump real high to catch it. Sometimes we have a visitor who plays ball with me. That’s fun. I like to play ball.

I play other games too. I play hide-and-seek with Mom. I hide behind a tree when she looks away from me. Then she has to find me. She always does. That’s when she gives me a big pet on the head.

Catch-up is a fun game too. That’s when Mom walks ahead of me. I let her get way far ahead. Then I run and run and run to catch her. She laughs and tells me I’m a good girl.

One of my favorite games is to play with my leash. Mom gives me my leash every day when we walk home from the mailbox. Sometimes it jumps away from me. And one day the wind blew it away from me. I always capture it back. I’m a good leash walker.

Sometimes when Mom’s busy I have to play by myself. That’s when I play with my chew bone. I chew it and chew it. But it doesn’t do much. I don’t think it minds my chewing it.

The other game I play alone is Watch the Floor. I keep looking and looking at the floor. Sometimes I find treasures. Once I found a creature that moved. That was kind of scary. I put my paw on it. I wanted to show Mom. But the scary creature ran away.

Another time I found a stone. It came off Mom’s shoe. I chased it across the floor. One time I found a dot on the floor. It smelled good so I licked it. It smelled better than it tasted. I know ‘cause I tasted it again to make sure it wasn’t very good.

Playing is fun. Mom says we need to play some every day. I think my mom’s right. We need to play every day. Play makes me happy.

Should You Fear Your Intuition?

Intuition is as common as breathing and should not be feared. That said, however, if we go into the deeper psychic energy, we must take measures to protect ourselves. What’s the difference between the intuition we use every day and psychic energy?

Intuition is innate within each of us. It’s that hunch or gut instinct that leads us in the right direction. As we develop and refine intuition, we deepen in awareness of our own insight into life; we become more aware of the answers that come to us as we learn to read the clues. As we deepen intuition we start to move into the psychic energy. It is here that we may encounter negative as well as positive information and energy. We are simply becoming more sensitive to other people’s energy, the collective energy, and energy emitting from Earth and the universe.

Poets and artists as well as psychics and other sensitive souls have this awareness of the energies, which allows us to tap into a greater consciousness. Some psychics are also mediums, which allows us to communicate with people and animals who have passed into what some call death, and what I call the spirit world.

It is when delving into the deeper consciousness and/or the spirit world that we do need to protect ourselves. Not everyone lives with grace and love in this life, and we don’t immediately become all loving the minute we leave this body and move into spirit world. Although love will always trump fear, there is evil energy that you don’t want – or need – to encounter. How do you avoid it?

We protect ourselves by simply evoking love in the form that is most comfortable for each of us. For example, I may simply say, “Only love may come to me.” Or, a prayer that I was taught by one of my teachers, Angel Gail, is also a simple, yet powerful prayer: “I know I am protected by the Divine Light of the Christ.”

Whatever words you say, say the prayer with conviction and see Divine Light encompassing you, infusing you with Divine Love. If these prayers are not the right ones for you, that’s okay. Follow your own heart to find the prayer that is right for you.

Remember, we are the ones in charge of our lives. It is up to us to be in a place of love rather than fear.

Fear can awaken intuition, but we don’t want to stay in the fear. Let’s say you’re in a parking garage when suddenly you feel fearful. What do you do? Take a breath and say the prayer of protection, which helps you move into a place of love where you are better able to read your intuition and know what steps to take to keep you safe.

What about non-human entities in the ethers? Should you be afraid of them? No. Entities are forms of fear energy that feed on fear. If you are plagued by fear, you need to work on your life to expunge fear from your thoughts, exchanging fearful thoughts for ones of love. There is nothing that can enter your energy unless you allow it to. Remember, you are in charge of your life. If at any time, you feel fearful, say a prayer of protection, and say it with intent and feeling. Say it over and over until love overtakes any fear you may be experiencing.

I love the simplicity of that which A Course In Miracles teaches us about fear. It says that all emotion comes from either fear or love. The unfolding of the understanding of that thought is complex, but when I’m caught in fear, I can remind myself of the simple thought that there is only fear or love, and I can move into a place of love.

As we develop intuition, we feel safer. More and more we’ll want to move away from the drama caused by fear and live in the love that is truly life. We’ll come more and more to rely on intuition to guide us, keeping us always safe and in life’s grace.

Piper’s Morning Walk

Every morning I take my mom for a walk. We walk all the way over to the creek. It’s a long way but I don’t ever get tired. That’s because I’m a big girl and I’m strong.

We walk the same way every day. That sounds boring. But it’s not. Mom tells me to look for something different every day. She’s right. There is something different to see every day. Moms are always right. Aren’t they? Well, most of the time anyway.

Some days I hear the crows. The robins and bluebirds and cardinals and sparrows sing for us too. And the roosters. They live far away with a farmer on the other side of the corn stalks. I hold my head up and move it around to listen to the crickets chirping and the wind blowing through the fields. Every day there’s a new flower to sniff, or the grass is taller, or the sun plays with new shadows. Every day is a new adventure.

Some days I have to protect Mom from the big dogs. She calls them deer. There’s a really big dog that barks at us sometimes. He’s a doggie-man. Mom calls him a Doberman. She always says hello to him. I pretend he’s not there. I keep walking.

Sometimes we see a car. They’re kind of scary. One day we saw two. I walk really close to Mom when we see a car. I have to protect her. Sometimes we even see a great big truck. They’re really, really scary. That’s ‘cause they’re so noisy. I hear them coming a long time before we see them. Sometimes we have to get in the grass. The trucks aren’t allowed to drive off the road, so I keep Mom safe in the grass.

I walk really close to Mom when we’re on the main road. I know it’s the main road because it has white and yellow stripes on it. We walk on the white ones along the side. The creek road doesn’t have any stripes. I like to walk close to Mom anyway. After all, I am her protector.

On the way home, I don’t walk as close to Mom. I walk way out in front of her. That’s ‘cause she sends her shadow ahead of her. And I have to keep her shadow from getting too far ahead of us.

Mom takes off my leash when we get back to our lane. She tells me she’s safe now so can run ahead. I always pick up my leash and run faster than Mom. All the way to the house.

A Gnostic Tale

(Following is one version of the story. In other versions, the prince is a boy, the son of the king of kings, who is sent to Egypt to retrieve a pearl from a serpent. During his quest, he is seduced by the people and forgets his origins. When the boy received a letter from his father, the king of kings, he remembers who he is, retrieves the pearl, and returns home.)

One day the great King of Heaven decided to send his beloved son, the prince, on a sacred mission to earth to find and bring back understanding of the Pearl of Great Price.

While in his mother’s womb he repeats to himself over and over that when he is born, he will not forget who he is and why he has come to earth.

However, at the moment of his birth, he does forget both his mission and his royal origins. As the world’s sights and sounds engulf him, he cries out in sorrow, “Alas! Alas! I have forgotten!” According to legend, this is the secret meaning behind every newborn infant’s cry.

Drawn to the world’s attractions, the prince becomes accustomed to this alien land and finally comes to believe it is the only home he has ever known.

Time passes. The prince marries, has children, and indulges in the age-old labors and pleasures of human existence, all the while remaining in a state of spiritual forgetfulness.

Decades go by. Then in his fortieth year, a milestone age for spiritual awakening, the King of Heaven sends his son a message: “Remember, seek, struggle, accomplish, return.”

But the prince pays no attention. He is too immersed in life. So, the King sends the message again, this time in a different form. Again, it is ignored.

Message after message is sent from the King of Heaven to the prince over a period of years, or if you will, over a period of lifetimes.

Gradually the prince begins to comprehend the meaning of these heavenly dispatches and to recognize their urgency. After much hesitation and many slips and falls, he answers his father’s call, finds the Pearl of Great Price—his spiritual nature—and returns home from exile.

Piper’s Mom’s Home

Sometimes my mom disappears. She always comes back. When she does, I’m ready for her.

I say hello-hello-hello to her as soon as I hear the garage door open. I keep saying hello-hello-hello until she’s all the way inside the house. That’s when she pets me on top of the head. And tells me she loves me. That makes me feel good.

I have to sniff her all over. I have to make sure she wasn’t with any other dogs. Or cats. Or any other animals. Sometimes she smells funny. Sometimes she smells really good. She smells like my treats. She always takes me to the pet store with her. So how could she smell like my treats? I start to ask her. She moves. I have to follow her.

She goes into the kitchen. That’s where she keeps my food. I already had breakfast. Is it dinner time? I lick her legs. She leans down and pets me. I like the rubs around my face and all the way down my back to my tail. It feels so good. Sometimes it even makes me forget about food.

She moves again. Now she’s right next to the treat box. I lick Mom’s legs some more. She tastes good. Even if she doesn’t taste like my treats. She tastes like Mom. I like that.

I wish my mom would never ever go away. I guess it’s okay ‘cause she always comes home to me. That makes me so happy. My mom being home. I’m happy even if she doesn’t have treats. Or taste like them.

Are You an Old Soul or a Young Soul?

For years I heard people talk about old souls and young souls and I didn’t pay much attention. What did it matter how old or young a soul was?

As I’ve contemplated the age of a soul and why it matters, I’ve come to better understand our human species. This understanding has not only given me greater knowledge of my life and chosen path but it has also given me more compassion for others. I hope it does the same for you.

What I’ve learned is that there are basically four stages of soul development, and these stages correspond to four stages of human development. New souls are like babies and toddlers; young souls are like teenage and young adults; mature souls are like adults; and old souls are like seniors.

This is NOT a hierarchy. No soul is better than another. The same is true of human life. Adults are not better than toddlers; they have just been around longer and may know something about life that a younger soul has not yet learned. Our soul age depends on how many lives we’ve lived and how we’ve grown.

We all grow at our own pace. What one soul learns in one lifetime may take another multiple lifetimes to learn.

Also, there are NO evil souls. There are, however, evil acts, which may be committed out of ignorance. We must love the soul while at the same time holding the human responsible for the acts of evil.

Keep in mind that we all go through the stages of human development so we may see an old soul in a toddler’s human expression or a new soul in a senior citizen. Also, each stage of development is on a continuum, so we see different phases of each stage of development. For example, a highly developed old soul will express differently than a newly developing old soul.

Here are the four stages of soul development and what I see as the general characteristics of each stage:

New souls

New souls are often charming and full of smiles, yet the depth of emotion is shallow. Emotions need time to grow and emerge. New souls are learning what huma life is all about. At this stage, life is all about them. They are inherently selfish, risk takers, and may not understand the consequences of their actions. They are often hurt and defensive. They have difficulty seeing the other’s point of view. They can be quite stubborn and may have explosive tempers.

Their gift to the world is their innocence and the ability to see beauty in everyone. Their challenge is to not let the world jade them and to allow their innocence to eventually mature into understanding and discernment as they grow.

Young souls

Young souls are often confused about the world around them. Emotions are raw and confusing and may be all over the place. They are often defensive and refuse to accept – or even hear – another’s opinion. They have a need to be right.

It is a time of exploring and developing the human nature. They are sensitive but it is not the sensitivity of the old soul. At this stage, the sensitivity is feeling the other is either all for them or against them. They lash out or pull inwardly and shut down. Guidance is needed but often rejected or even resented. Like new souls, young souls are inherently selfish, risk takers, and may not understand the consequences of their actions.

Their gift to the world is their energy. So much is new and exciting. Their challenge is to know there is a tomorrow and to use their energy constructively in their lives and in the world and to grow from selfishness to selflessness.

Mature souls

Mature souls see the top of the mountain but are not yet able to see to the other side. Still ego based, there’s more climbing to take place. They have given up the squabbles and are learning discernment, yet they are not fully aware of how their words and actions affect others. They are the doers who build steel bridges but not always bridges among people.

Their gift to the world is that they are the brick and mortar that hold societies together; they do the work to keep life in movement. Their challenge is awareness, to open their eyes and hearts to see beyond their own small world into the greater world and the beauty of its diversity.

Old souls

Old souls are only about 17 to 20 percent of the population. These are the spiritual leaders, the bodhisattvas who walk away from Nirvana to return to human form to help others. These are the sensitive ones, the empaths whose lives are devoted to being of service to others. The old souls among us help to raise the consciousness of all of us. Old souls have some of the most difficult lives. They have taken on the world’s deepest wounds to create patterns of healing for others to follow. They need time alone but also may need time among people.

Their gift to the world is the love they live through their thoughts, words, and actions. Their challenge is to shed the ego and live from the spiritual self and to remain deeply sensitive in an insensitive world and mature to where they are able to use their sensitivity to help others rather than against themselves.

Once we understand that people may be new to this planet and acting out of their highest knowledge, it’s easier to accept them even if we do not accept or understand their acts. Wherever we are – new soul, young soul, mature soul, or old soul – we are all doing our best. Hold us accountable for our acts and help us grow . . . and love us as a soul.

Living Life as a Prayer

For years my prayer was to live my life as a prayer. It took many more years to come to understand what that meant, and had I known, I just might not have prayed so hard . .  . or even prayed that prayer at all. Yet I’m deeply grateful I did.

Although I can’t say that I live my life as a prayer all the time, what I can say is that I’ve come to some glimpse of understanding of what it means to live my life as a prayer, and in those precious moments of grace, I feel the beauty and experience the divine ecstasy of Being, and it brings me to my knees in gratitude.

What does it mean to live life as a prayer? It means seeing the Beloved in everyone by looking beyond the human flaws and seeing the other’s spirit. It means knowing the other is there because we have called them to us to help us heal worn-out patterns and move into a greater self. It means having reverence for all nature and respect for all beings. It means finding sheer joy in the simple movement of every day and living with gratitude for that which is. It means living with compassion instead of anger, trust instead of fear, and truth instead of drama. It means living and breathing and being Love.

It means living fully the human experience from the deeper spirit with a profound knowing that all life is unfolding as it is to unfold, and although we may not understand the bigger story and may even suffer in our not understanding, we know, we know there is something so much greater than we are at this moment and we are content to sit quietly within this great mystery and just be full and complete.

When Mom Goes Away

Sometimes my mom goes away. And she doesn’t take me with her! How can she do that?

I tell her it makes me so sad. Then I walk her over to the treat box. That’s when I smile and tell her a treat will make me happy. She always gives me a big treat.

My favorite treat is peanut butter inside a bone. I lick and lick to get all the peanut butter out. Well, maybe my favorite is a chewy bone. I can eat the whole thing. I lick and lick and lick and chew and chew and chew. Or, maybe my favorite is the peanut butter doggy cookie. Or the…gosh, I love all my treats.

It takes a long time to eat my treat. After that I always take a nap. I sleep and sleep. And I dream about the treat I just ate. And maybe Mom will give me a treat when she gets home. And she’ll give me pets too. Lots of pets and cuddles.

I’d wake up if a burglar tried to break in. Or if someone rang the doorbell. But no burglars ever come. That makes Mom happy. And the doorbell hardly ever rings. I don’t even get to bark at the cars and delivery trucks driving down the road. I can’t hear them. They’re too far away. That’s ‘cause the road is far away. It’s all the way at the end of our long, long country lane.

So, I just eat my treat and sleep. There’s not much else to do. At least not until Mom comes home. Maybe I’ll even get another treat then.

Intuition

At the deepest levels of ourselves we are wise. When we listen to our inner stirrings, we know how to live good and enriched lives. We understand the meaning of our lives and the purpose of our service to all humanity.

When we follow the urgings of our inner voice, we flow through life with grace and alertness to our surroundings. From the mundane (Which line is the quickest?) to the profound (What is my calling?) our intuition, at the very least, helps us know ourselves more intimately.

Intuition developed may allow us to touch the very essence of the luminous, mystical experience.

You Matter

Every breath you take,

every sound you make,

every word you say,

every way you play,

every time you’re glad,

every time you’re sad,

every way you feel,

every thing you heal,

every thing you do,

be true to you.

You matter.
